Music for the journey

Many of us have discovered new things during the Corona virus lock down period. Some have developed amazing new skills, transformed their homes, begun work on that book they always wanted to write. Nearly all of us have had to find new routines and patterns of life - having a walk or other exercise every day, learning to go to the shops only once a week, becoming a home teacher.

One of my routines is driving to Southport a couple of evenings a week, when I take my wife to work. On the way we have the chance to chat, on the way back I get to watch the mirror for an approaching cars carrying suspicious police officers wondering if I am a seaside day tripper sneaking home!

One of the things that has become part of the routine is listening to UCB and Premier Christian Radio on the journey home. Having a car with a digital radio has great advantages as I couldn't get those stations in my old car.

Both those stations have a mixture of Christian music (traditional and contemporary) and teaching. I was expecting that the speakers I listened to would say some things that I wouldn't agree with. Some of the talks even carry a health warning beforehand: "this programme relfects the views of the speaker, rather than our radio station"; "some listeners may not agree with the content of the following talk". However, I have been very blessed by the words as well as the music I have heard on my travels.

On a Sunday evening (with a bit of station hopping) I can get to hear both Joyce Meyer and Jeff Lucas, both of whom I have found to be inspirational and encouraging at this difficult time. There is the added advantage of Joyce Meyer's humour and Jeff Lucas's down to earth honesty. I usually get home feeling positive about the week ahead.

The words of the songs played on the stations are also often helpful and moving. Also, spending time at home watching services on You Tube has enabled some unexpected discoveries - musicians and songs I had never heard before.

Searching on You Tube today I discovered Lenny Le Blanc, who you may be aware is the co author of the worship song "Above all powers"

Lenny gave up a career as a top 40 artist to devote himself to Christian music ministry.  I came across another song of his which seems really relevant to today. Here are the words:

If I could have one desire before my life is through,
even in my darkest night my light would shine for you.
If I could stop the hands of time,  or make a wish come true,
I would tell my heart to burn with fire for no one else but you.
This is my one desire.

You are my saving grace, anchor of my soul
and in a world that's turned upside down I want you to know:

You are my faithful friend, the one that I lean on. You always understand.
With all that I am I'll give you the deepest devotion I know.
With all of my strength I won't let you go.
As I look to you above, I will give you all my love.

I hope you too have found words, music and other sources of blessing and encouragement over the past few weeks.

  1. Thank you for your blogs, Peter. A valuable ministry. Especially now we rely more on digital media and less on face to face chats.
